With the cold weather setting in, I have taken to enjoying a hot cup of tea pretty regularly--it warms my soul.
My kitchen is a set up to be a raw food kitchen & we use 3/4 of our stovetop as counter space & 1/4 to heat the tea kettle. I'll bet you know where I am going with this ... yesterday morning I turned on the WRONG burner & walked into the living room.
I was sitting on the couch reading an e-mail when I looked up & out of the corner of my eye I saw flames in the reflection of the kitchen window. I ran to the kitchen & saw my stovetop on fire. I screamed. It was a SCARY sight! I opened the cupboard under the sink where we fortunately keep a fire extinguisher, & I sprayed it on the stove. Within seconds the fire was out. PHEW!
That was a wake up call. While my expensive vitamix container & my spice grinder melted in the fire, I am so grateful we weren’t hurt & that there wasn’t more damage. I am telling you this story because I don’t want you to make the same mistake. As careful as we all think we are every time we turn on the stove, it only takes one mistake to put yourself in harm’s way.
After cleaning up the HUGE mess from the fire extinguisher, we removed the control buttons on the stovetop so that we can NEVER make that mistake again. And we are planning to take the stove out of the kitchen all together & replace it with an official countertop space. YEAH!
MORAL of the story: You cannot be too careful--Know where your fire extinguisher is! And if you don’t have one, get one! And it you are using your stove as a counter, make sure you cannot mistakenly turn on the wrong burner.
