Crazy's Dick Cajun Foods

chefweb
Winter is here & we can all use a little something to take the chill off, right? Well, I have the perfect thing for that ... Crazy Dick’s Cajun Seasoning. It puts a little spice in your step.

My friends Rich & Lori are behind Crazy Dick’s & it’s a fabulous product ... an ALL organic cajun seasoning with ZERO sodium. It’s made here in Maine & I love adding a teaspoon to my chili or warm soup recipes or veggie smoothie drinks. Oh ya, & and it tastes great as a seasoning for candied nuts. They have 2 flavors, regular & smokey, so I recommend getting both! :-)

The Dempsey Challenge 100 Mile Bike Ride

My friend & fellow vegan, Paula Birmingham, shared her amazing story of her 100 mile bike ride at the Dempsey Challenge on October 9th. WAY TO GO, PAULA! You are simply RAWsome & an inspiration! xoxo Here’s what she had to say:

I just wanted to share with you how well my 100 mile ride went on Sunday.  As you know we had fabulous weather!!  The ride really could not have gone better.  It was hard with really challenging hills but the volunteer's were wonderful, keeping us on course and at the rest stops.  Miles 80-100 were the toughest but that is to be expected.  I finished just under 7 hours riding time, what a long time! My mom met me at mile 84 and I had a friend and her mom support me at the 2 of the three rest stops I stopped at.  Such wonderful support these friends are. I still can't believe they drove the who 100 mile course over an 8 hour period to support me.  Simply amazing the kindness of friends.

You may recall that I was hoping a pair of biking shorts would be in by the ride and they did arrive, the Thursday before so just enough time to run them through the wash.  On the back they say Go Vegan!  I had a handful of people comment on the shorts and perhaps for others it was just a chance for awareness and questioning, what does go vegan mean?  One fellow biker came alongside me and simply said, "China Study" to which I replied, "Oh, yes.  That is how it all started".

I started with a double banana, orange and blueberry smoothie for breakfast before the ride, lots of water along the way, more bananas and oranges.  I did have three granola like bars but was happy to have the knowledge to stay away from the other items at the rest stops that really would not have been good for me riding (or not), such as candy and sandwiches.  I have to say, perhaps this is with bias, I do feel that the water rich fruits and raw foods do (and did) help with performance as well as recovery.  Hydration is really hard during these long rides so the grapes, watermelons and oranges were a nice add to all the liquids.

It was a very moving day before the ride and at the end.  I am grateful that I was able to take part and feel the support of so many people who are working to support each other with the challenges of ill health and cancer. Those personal moments I will not forget.

WOOO-HOOOOOOOOOO, Paula! So cool--thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Girl Gone Raw was at the Demsey Challenge too ... not running races, but fueling the bodies of kids & their people in the KidZone. Check out the post below to see how the weekend went for me. :-)

The RAWsome Snack Shack

DSCN5206.JPGDSCN5181.JPGDSCN5278

We were set up at the Dempsey Challenge in Lewiston making rawsome SUPER HERO smoothies & rawkin' applesauce in the KidZone on Oct 8th & 9th & we had so much fun!  It was great to connect with Dempsey Challenge participants & their families over a celebration of healthy living through nutrition & physical activity.

The rawsome snack shack was a big hit!  There were lots of adorable green smoothie mustaches going on & lots of smiles over the apple sauce.

The Dempsey Challenge is an INCREDIBLE event!  WOW ... it is so organized & thoughtfully put together & the staff & volunteers were out-of-this-world!  We were in awe of all that happened here & grateful to have been a part of the festivities!  THANK YOU!

Have you heard? There is a NEW place for raw food lovers to congregate in the virtual world! That place is the Raw Living Collective. It’s an incredible site with lots of room for sharing & learning & I am a contributor & will be posting lots of fun tips & tools there. CHECK IT OUT! :-)

I had the pleasure of working with Kristel Hayes of
Mesh Marketing as she embarked on a raw food journey & lifestyle transition over the Summer. Kristel embraced everything raw & living foods--she was eager to learn & did lots of experimenting in her kitchen. Inspired by her new love for raw food, Kristel used her amazing graphics, web design & social media skills to start the Raw Living Collective. It’s such a cool place for raw foods enthususiats to come together & share & learn from one another.

What a RAWSOME online community you have created, Kristel! Thank you for creating this cool space!

The Art of Food Photography

send_8226

I have had the pleasure of getting to know professional Maine photographer Felice Boucher over the past few months. Raw food brought us together at a Whole Foods Class I taught back in May, and we have had so much fun playing ever since.

Raw food is so creative and colorful and to have a professional photographer bring it all to life through pictures is such a treat. Felice has taken some photos of our class creations and some of her at home creations too. Her photos are so stunning, I just had to share a few with you in this post. Thank you for sharing your gift with me, Felice! :-)

It’s so hard to not take pictures of the beauty that is raw & living foods. Really! In fact, in most of my classes all kinds of cameras come out ... smartphones, cell phones & digital cameras. It always makes me smile, because I can relate to the need to document a gorgeous plate of fresh, plant-based food.
